Writing a novel is less like inscribing a sentence from beginning to end, and more like making a house out of Playdough. You start with a squarish lump, trim here, glop on whole sections there, tear pieces off, watch sections drop away when they’re too heavy, and then, when you have something somewhat resembling a house, you then realize you were really building a battleship and start all over.
